And what if the remedy for facing the current torments of our ailing societies was a folk record like they no longer make, as fascinating as it is elegant?

Two years after Waiting for The Piano To Fall, Nick Wheeldon is back, accompanied by The Living Paintings, to deliver a new chapter of his discography: Tadpoles. In this album, as radiant as it is moving, the collective energy of the band shines through the compositions of the boundaryless talented British songwriter. Without abandoning his obsessions, always introspective and deeply humanistic, Nick Wheeldon combines melancholy and optimism here, between hope and nostalgia.

After more than a year of silence in terms of recordings, it took the band no more than seven days to lay down these nine new tracks. Entirely recorded in analog, featuring a brass section, giving plenty of space to the saxophone and violin as well as a good dose of improvisation, Tadpoles reflects its creator: a breath of fresh air in an increasingly anxious world saturated with artifacts that mock authenticity, here rediscovered. 

Having arrived in Paris about a dozen years ago, he who long carried his voice and guitar around Sheffield, on the other side of the Channel, has never known how to do things halfway. A prolific songwriter with a handful of albums created with as many bands as the many facets that make him up (Os Noctàmbulos, 39th and The Nortons, The Necessary Separation), Nick Wheeldon once again unpacks his bags along with what he holds in his hand: his heart. Here everything is alive, everything breathes, everything invites contemplation: luminous harmonies, adventurous melodies, meticulous arrangements, raw emotions, and spontaneity are at the heart of this masterpiece, as sensitive as it is refined, carried by poetic lyrics filled with naturalistic and dreamlike imagery from someone who knows how to reconcile the forces of nature and unleashed elements with his most exalted feelings.

It was in Lüe, a small town in the Landes, that the live recordings were made with Stephane Jach on violin, Sam Roux on piano, Luc Martin on bass, and Nico Brusq on drums. Not to forget, of course, Paul Trigoulet, a faithful companion whom we find on guitar, trumpet, but also behind the controls at the Lille studio Fausse Boutique for a dazzling mix from start to finish, a subtle blend of infinite clarity and regained warmth. Joining this dream team are also Marc Mouches (saxophone), Michel Roux (mellophone), and especially Laurent Rigaut (saxophone and bass clarinet) with his free approach to his wandering instruments. From the dreamy pragmatism of 'You Can’t Have It All' to the unstoppable groove of 'Summer Prey,' a whole sensitive world slips into our ears, never to leave. 

So this record could be the story of a tadpole that became a frog for good; but that would be to misunderstand Nick Wheeldon, and we look forward to once again enjoying such a powerful revelation of his exceptional talent.

Arrivé à Paris depuis une douzaine d’année, celui qui a longtemps traîné sa voix et sa guitare du côté de Sheffield, de l’autre côté de la manche, n’a jamais su faire les choses à moitié. Prolifique auteur d’une poignée d’albums réalisés avec autant de groupes que les multiples facettes qui le compose (Os Noctàmbulos, 39th and The Nortons, The Necessary Separation), Nick Wheeldon déballe à nouveau ses valises en même temps que ce qu’il a sur la main : son cœur. Ici tout est vivant, tout respire, tout pousse à la contemplation : harmonies lumineuses, mélodies aventureuses, arrangements soignés, émotions brutes et spontanéité sont au centre de ce chef d’œuvre aussi sensible que raffiné, porté par les textes poétiques aux images naturalistes et oniriques de celui qui sait concilier forces de la nature aux éléments déchaînés avec ses sentiments les plus exaltés.

C’est à Lüe, une petite commune des Landes, que les prises live ont été réalisées avec Stephane Jach au violon, Sam Roux au piano, Luc Martin à la basse et Nico Brusq à la batterie. Sans oublier bien-sûr Paul Trigoulet, fidèle compagnon de route que l’on retrouve à la guitare, à la trompette mais aussi derrière les manettes du studio Lillois Fausse Boutique pour un mixage éblouissant de bout en bout, subtile mélange d’infinie clarté et de chaleur retrouvée. À cette dream team s’ajoute également Marc Mouches (saxophone), Michel Roux (mellophone) et surtout Laurent Rigaut (saxophone et clarinette basse) avec son approche free de ses instruments vagabonds. Du pragmatisme rêveur de You Can’t Have It All au groove imparable de Summer Prey, c’est tout un monde sensible qui se glisse alors dans nos oreilles pour ne plus en ressortir.

Ce disque pourrait donc être l’histoire d’un tadpole devenu froggy pour de bon ; mais ce sera mal connaître Nick Wheeldon, et on se réjouit de savourer à nouveau une si puissante révélation de son talent d’exception.
